Waterkloof, now also known as Safe-Waterkloof, established in 1904, is well known for its Jacarandas but more so for its a?uent population and diplomatic number plates (and no load shedding). Those even more familiar with Waterkloof (or as per recent Wikipedia search on “Waterkloof” proved) will know that there are even more sought after addresses on the Waterkloof contour– Victoria Street and Edward Street!
The brief from the new owners during 2017 to the Architects, Jaco Minnaar and Donette Werkman from Minnaar Werkman Architects, was to restore, renew and re-imagine the property to a signature property, on par, no- even better-, than the surrounding residences and Embassies.
The owner was open to radical change but wanted the structure to retain some of its old-world charm and charisma and strong 1960's design elements.

The original house featured interior gems – the exceptional woodwork in the study, the main wooden staircase as well as the original upholstered bar, sure elements to be celebrated in the planned renovation and extension.
Though a solid 60's house, masterly built with rock-solid foundations, literally, as seen in the lower-ground storeroom, this renewal was done over a 2 year period, finished in 2019, by master-builder, Riaan Roos from Block Projects and has since been annually maintained by them.
333 Edward Street, has, through the owner’s vision and the architect's design been restored, rejuvenated, and re-imagined. The now landmark residence, measuring a total of 1,838sqm on the large, elevated stand of 2,470 sqm, was given a new lease on life, by adapting to the requirements of modern upmarket living. All this with brand names, stunning views, special attention to lighting and space, space and space.
The property already offered views as far as possible, and the owner wanted the house to resemble a unique signature residence, competing with the best the capital city can offer.
New additions and changes to the structure were to be modern, with the intention of contrasting with the old, rather than blending in. Many original architectural elements like interior doors, original wood staircase and retro bar counter, were re-used in the design.
For a property to be used also for high profile entertainment opportunities, the garden was levelled and re-designed with functionality of utmost importance. This included a strategic positioned pool and wooden deck with roofed veranda, pool room with bathroom for guests, high boundary walls for additional privacy. This space is on the South-Eastern part of the property. There is a second separate roofed veranda for a smaller gathering or to receive guests with cocktails, on the Northern side of the property.
PROPERTY OVERVIEW
A significant cost was incurred in the design and leveling of the sloping garden, and new boundary walls for privacy and security. The borehole and the added automated irrigation system aid in cost effective easy maintenance of the professionally landscaped garden.
