Port St Johns is the centre of tourism on the Wild Coast. It is famous for its 3 bathing beaches, deep sea fishing, rock and surf angling. Port St Johns has an airstrip on top of Mount Thesiger and nearby is the Pondoland Park being a national forested park area measuring 500km². The annual “Sardine Run” attracts divers, photographers and oceanographers from all over the world. Cremorne also hosts the annual “Grunter Classic” which attracts anglers from all over South Africa.
Port St Johns town has a population of approximately 6 500 people. It is situated at the mouth of the Mighty Umzimvubu river, 300 km northeast of East London and 100 km from Mthatha. Boasting some of the most beautiful nature scenery in the country. The Mighty Umzimvubu river flowing through an impressive gorge known as the “Gates of St Johns” into an estuary located on the Indian Ocean. On both sides of the river ravine are high sandstone mountain peaks. Mount Thesiger (342m above sea level) and Mount Sullivan (304m above sea level).
