The reserve is situated a few kilometres from the quant holiday destination of Pearly Beach, between Gansbaai and Bredasdorp. The area world-renowned for great white shark cage diving, whale watching and the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve nearby where unique experiences await and one can indulge in unparalleled luxury. The most Southern Tip of Africa is also only a couple of kilometres away.
This game reserve offers a diverse typographical layout of sandy stretches, low lying deep alluvial soil, low lying flat land as well is typical wetlands on the banks of the rivers. Two perennial rivers, the Uilenkrans and Boesmans rivers join on the reserve and transverse through the reserve flowing strongly after normal rainfall in the valleys and mountains upstream. All the riverbanks have mature trees which contribute to the beauty and ambience of the farm. These trees also increase the carrying capacity of the farm, as well as the variety of game species, especially those that feed on the leaves and pips of the trees. A special ambience is also created by the vast low-lying flood plains (vloed leegtes) covered with savannah grasses. After good rains in the mountains upstream, some of the rivers spread widely, forming floodplains which provide an abundance of quality grass vegetation for various game species to graze on. These floodplains further increase the carrying capacity of the farm!
There is a diversity of vegetation with patches of grass, shrubs, bushes with denser riverine thicket and tall trees along the banks of the dry rivers. Due to this balanced habitat system, there is a perfect balance in terms of a diversity of naturally available food for both browsers and grazers. Kudu and Eland heaven! Blue buffalo grass (Cenchrus cilliaris), regarded as one of the best pasture species to adapt to dry and wet conditions, is a perennial grass that grows in dense, messy looking clumps. This palatable grass with its high nutritive value, together with other grasses, flourish on the reserve.
There is a rich ecosystem where game species roam freely while one can enjoy the prolific natural scenes in this untamed wilderness. Feel at one with the serene surroundings and let tranquillity soothe the soul.
Driving or hiking through this exclusive game farm offers an exceptional safari experience. Exciting game drives in an open vehicle allow unobstructed views of the plains game. Game thrives here and game breeding exceeds all expectations on the reserve.
In addition to the plains game, this game farm has an exceptional nocturnal life, the sounds of which add to the peaceful atmosphere.
Mostly winter rainfall occurs in this area. The long-term average is approximately 600mm per annum.
At present the game species include 150 Eland, 2 Oryx, 45 Kudu, 35 Waterbuck, 60 Impala, 26 Black Wildebeest, 35 Zebra, 35 Fallow Deer, and indigenous small antelope such as Bushbuck which roam the area. It is to be noted that these numbers are only about 50% of the carrying capacity of the reserve, should the total area be deforested. At present only 600 hectares have been deforested. The ideal is to deforest the total acreage of the reserve, but leaving the larger thorn, mirre and Melkhout trees.
The perimeter of the reserve is duly game fenced with 2,8 metres electrified Bonnox fencing in excellent repair due to ongoing maintenance. A network of good roads is spread across the reserve making management, control, and game viewing much more convenient.
The farm exudes a great sense of being at one with nature and offers spectacular views and sunsets.
Adequate water, pumped from boreholes that are fitted with solar pumps or windmills, secure a constant water supply to the respective game water drinking holes.
Irrigation water for the 30-hectare irrigation land is per registered water usage rights in terms of the Water Act of 1998. Water is pumped directly from the borehole with a capacity of 20,000 litres per hour, using a mono pump, from where it is reticulated all around the irrigation area to the various irrigation blocks. The idea is to develop it further to produce samphire on a large scale. Red and green samphire naturally occurs on the reserve and will do extremely well under irrigation. Water is also stored in a large reservoir to irrigate the lush gardens and mature trees.
The main dwelling consists of 3 bedrooms, 2 bedrooms, an open-plan living room and kitchen boasting an inside braai. There are also 2 cottages which are rented on a short-term basis to hunters or weekend game viewers. The open-plan living areas flow onto the under-cover patio where sundowners can be enjoyed while gazing at the breath-taking, panoramic views over the landscape and far-away mountain ranges.
A large shed and old milking parlour are used to store tractors and implements as well as fodder. There is also a butchery, cooler room, and fully-equipped workshop. Farming equipment includes a Landcruiser, old Hilux bakkie, 3 tractors, a front-end loader, two tipper -, one diesel - and a general trailer as well as a quad bike.
This is an ideal game reserve to be developed to its full potential as a sought-after nature and game destination of note! This idyllic lifestyle in an exclusive area remains an elusive dream to most of us mortals!
