It is one of the fastest growing areas in the country and has become an attractive alternative to Cape Town for buyers looking to semigrate to the Western Cape coast. It has a long-standing reputation as a top destination for holiday makers and retirees.

George enjoys one of the best climates in the country with plenty of sunshine and healthy, wholesome living.

Renowned for the forests in the area, George was initially established as an outpost for timber in 1776 by the Dutch East India Company. By 1811 it was declared a separate district and gained municipal status in 1837. In the 1920s, it formed part of the woodcutters industry of the area which provided wood for local industries such as furniture and wagon making. Today, the area is still characterised by its wood with many sawmills in operation. It is surrounded by nature reserves including the Tsitsikamma National Park making it a haven for nature lovers and those seeking outdoor pursuits from hiking, cycling, mountain biking and bird watching.

George offers easy access to one of the most beautiful coastlines in the country with clean beaches and a warm ocean, attracting beach lovers, sunbathers, surfers, water sport enthusiast and anglers. Victoria Bay, just east of central George, is world-renowned for surfing, particularly during winter. Herolds Bay is a great place for bathing, safe tidal pool swimming and fishing. Wilderness is renowned for its vast stretch of beaches, natural rivers, lakes and estuaries which are ideal for bird watching and outdoor activities.

George is a busy and growing commercial sector, offering employment to locals and plenty of entrepreneurial opportunities to service the growing local population. It is ideal for buyers from all walks of life, especially families given the wholesome environment to raise children and for older buyers given the excellent climate and medical facilities. There is an endless array of facilities and amenities from sport and leisure clubs, to theatre, movies and at times top sporting events such as the Rugby 7s. There are also libraries and many places of worship representing a wide range of denominations.

There are about 38 schools across the area, catering for every child's needs, from public to private schools. Tertiary institutions include a Nelson Mandela University Campus, South Cape College Campus, a Flight Training College along with several other training schools.

George offers excellent medical care with public and private hospitals including three Mediclinics and an Eye Clinic. It is renowned for its golf estates, boasting two of the top ten golf courses in the country - Fancourt and Oubaai - both offering excellent facilities and a range of investment properties along with many newer golf estates and security developments, ideal for today's property investor.

George offers a diverse set of suburbs and neighbourhoods to choose from, located both inland and on the coast and a vast choice of sectional title complexes and estates. There are also a wide choice of newer estates offering a range of housing along with luxury homes. There are also still a wide choice of vacant plots and new developments as well as smallholdings and lifestyle and commercial farms.
