WC retire building to be extended

02 Apr 2008
A R25m extension to a retirement building in Darling on the West Coast is soon to be launched.

Groeneweide will be building 30 new units, some as an extension to the existing 30-year old building and some (the more expensive) in freestanding blocks, with their own entrance, behind the existing complex. The complex will be completely secure, with controlled access to the public.

Floor sizes will vary from 49sq m to 76sq m. On offer are two sizes of one bedroom apartments and two types of two bedroom apartments, the largest being single storey and with their own garages.

Buyers here will become the owners of a "Life Right" to live in the village until their deaths and this, along with small monthly levies, will entitle them to a daily midday meal in the centre's dining room and to daily cleaning and upkeep services. The complex will also provide medical and laundry services and a hair salon.

Groeneweide, says Marijanne van Nieuwenhoven from Rawson Properties Darling, is a "mature" retirement village: it caters for people in all stages of health, from the age of 55.

Those requiring 24 hour care can move to the 30 bed frail-care unit. A new convalescent section will be built for use by those recovering from hospital stays and operations.

Marijanne Van Nieuwenhoven said that Groeneweide is now 30 years old and has made a name for itself as a hospitable, cheerful retirement village where people are happy. Sunday morning services from the local NG Kerk are relayed through to Groeneweide's communal area, enabling all who so wish to participate in worship.

The initial launch of the project takes place at 9:30 for 10:00 on Saturday 12 April.
