15 Apr 2021

Bree Street in Cape Town is one of the coolest streets in the Mother City - from vibrant eateries and art galleries to modern micro-living options, this street’s appeal is iconic.

Now it is home to Cape Town’s highest penthouse - a 2-bedroom apartment with a pool, private bar and Jacuzzi currently on the market for R45M.

However, property development in the oldest CBD in South Africa is complex and needs to be ever mindful of preserving the City’s vibrant culture and heritage.  Building a 36-storey development right over a 120-year-old Harbour Warehouse was no mean structural challenge, according to the developers.

With the recent handing over of FWJK’s  latest flagship development, 16 on Bree thus a remarkable success story.

“Previous attempts by other developers to develop the site were unsuccessful,” says FWJK’s CEO, Dave Williams-Jones. He adds that the challenges of dealing with a number different owners in the Bree Street city block together with concerns about preserving the area’s heritage buildings all added up to a challenging development process. Fast forward nearly three years later and the R1.1 billion skyscraper is now the "tallest residential development in Cape Town".

At 36 stories, it is comprised of 373 contemporary apartments, an entertainment deck and pool, callisthenic gym and a co-working space.

FWJK’s Co-Development Methodology

“Some 44 investors who invested in multiple apartments at the cost successfully on sold many of their apartments throughout the development and became co-developers in the iconic 16 on Bree development," says Williams-Jones.

“16 on Bree was FWJK’s 45th development in South Africa and is the latest in a 13 year success story after its first co-development was launched in 2008 at the beginning of the World Economic Recession.
