Remove rust from garden furniture

06 Sep 2013

It's officially spring, which means spending more time outdoors. This is an exciting time where one can relax and enjoy nature, but this isn’t always possible, especially if your steel garden furniture is ‘out of shape.’

Rust is a big problem when it comes to steel, and if left unattended, it will irretrievably damage the furniture.

Rust is a big problem when it comes to steel, and if left unattended, it will irretrievably damage the furniture.

Here’s how to remove rust from steel furniture…

Before taking on this project, grab a Dremel Multitool and sanding ring, as well as a can of Rust-Oleum Universal spray paint.

Homeowners could also make use of Rust-Oleum Rust Stripper, which is a bit messy but works like a dream.

Lay down some newspaper or a dropcloth to protect your surrounding areas and begin.

Pop a steel brush into your driver or drill or make use of a Dremel Rotary Tool with a brush or sanding ring. This tool is perfect for steel and wire garden furniture, as it lets you get into all the small areas.

Restore rust infected furniture using sanding tools and a bit of paint.

I like to use a Dremel Multitool to strip off any flaking paint and remove the top layer of rust and then apply Rust-Oleum Rust Stripper to get rid of the rest.

When using Rust Stripper wear gloves and goggles. This stuff contains acid and is best used with care.

Sand down the affected area with 180-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface and prepare it for painting.

Wipe it clean before applying two light, even coats of Rust-Oleum Universal spray paint in your choice of colour. You could also opt for a metallic finish or Rust-Oleum Universal Oil-Rubbed Bronze to give your furniture a good-looking end coat.
