Port St Johns pegged as SA's next 'coastal city'

22 Mar 2021

The idyllic Eastern Cape town of Port St Johns is set to be developed into a major coastal city. The area falls under the greater OR Tambo district and is seen as one of the places that can be developed into an economic hub to stimulate growth in rural areas, through government's District Development Model (DDM).

President Cyril Ramaphosa previously announced government would make R11.5bn available for the service delivery model pilot in the OR Tambo District

Located between Durban and East London – a stretch of land with no major city for over 600km, the entire district has "unmatched potential for ecotourism and diversified marine biology".

Delivering the keynote address during the Port St Johns Local Municipality Strategic Planning Session, Department of Cooperative Governance Director-General (DG), Avril Williamson emphasised "the institutionalisation of long-range planning in the development of Port St Johns as a new coastal city".

In a statement, the department said the strategic planning session presented an opportunity for reflection on the performance of Port St John and to reimagine its future within the context of the DDM.

Williamson also emphasised the importance of Integrated Development Plans (IDPs), which are more central to people development service provision and good governance.

“To this end, the IDPs and One Plan have to be integrated so as to have a positive impact on communities. The OR Tambo DDM Hub is important as it is an extension of the CoGTA support system and a resource capacity for all municipalities in the OR Tambo district particularly as it pertains to shared services to facilitate integrated planning across the three spheres of government,” says the DG.

Port St John is also seen as an integral part of the coastal belt plan, which includes other inland hub development to link Alexander Bay in the Northern Cape to Kosi Bay in Kwazulu-Natal.
