For those who love boating, fishing, water-skiing or birdwatching, there can be few more desirable locations than the Port Owen marina, located on the Cape West Coast at the mouth of the Berg River.

This four bedroom house in Port Owen, Admiral Island offers underfloor heating, two lounges, a gym and a wine cellar. It is on the market for R6.9 million - click here to view.

The marina development lies between the town of Velddrif and the fishing harbour of Laaiplek, just inland from the sheltered sweep of St Helena Bay.

Pam Golding Properties (PGP) says its location only 145 kilometres from Cape Town makes it an ideal weekend and holiday destination, as well as a tranquil environment for full-time residents and retirees.

Port Owen was South Africa’s first deep-water residential development, and spans an area of around 100 hectares, with over 3.5 kilometres of canals. It is named for the original developer H. Owen Higgins junior, who spent some 15 years overseeing the dredging of over one million cubic metres of sand and rock to create the network of canals and waterfront plots which exists today.

Higgins also established the Port Owen Yacht Club, which is now a flourishing social centre for the community. St Helena Bay boasts some of the best and safest sailing on the coast thanks to its sheltered location, while the Berg River is navigable for small craft for nearly 40 kilometres upstream, creating an ideal playground for those who love boating.

The marina is surrounded by pristine wetlands, and as a result boasts some of the best birdwatching in the province, with over 350 species of land, river, sea and wetland species.

PGP agent Liza Steyn says there are currently a number of excellent investment opportunities available in Port Own, including everything from waterfront mansions to secure lock-up-and-go duplexes.

“Among the most prestigious properties are those found on Admiral Island, which lies on the western-most edge of Port Owen and is accessible via a single access point, a bridge which enjoys 24 hour security monitoring.

“The Island spans around 21 hectares and consists of just under 200 erven, with about two thirds of them located right on the waterfront. This is an exclusive, private residential area with no commercial activity whatsoever, and no possibility of unchecked expansion due to its geographical limits, as it is completely surrounded by the river and canals. Many residents have their own private jetties and visit their friends by boat for sundowners, skiing or fishing,” she says.

Homes on Admiral Island tend to fetch anywhere from R3.5 million to R8 million, depending on their size, location and luxury finishes. Some of the most exclusive properties enjoy 360 degree views of river, ocean, canals and wetlands, and have luxury finishes and numerous extras such as private gyms, swimming pools and wine cellars.

There are also plentiful options for those on a smaller budget, including the new Marina Point development, located on the water’s edge in the main Port Owen marina basin. PGP has just two units still available for buying in this 25-unit luxury duplex development, priced from R1.36 million inclusive of transfer duties. The development offers access controlled security, private moorings and wonderful marina views.

“Thanks to recent market conditions there are a number of excellent buys available at present, and across a variety of price ranges,” says PGP’s area manager for the West Coast, Stephanie Wynne Cole.

“For those who enjoy the waterfront lifestyle or who want to invest in a second home, this is the ideal time and place to buy. Port Owen has all the benefits of a small town coastal lifestyle, while still being within easy reach of major amenities, and a manageable distance from a big city and an international airport,” says Wynne Cole.
