Overberg to get new shopping centre

12 Nov 2009
Construction of a new R80m shopping centre in the Overberg town of Bredasdorp is in full swing.

The Bredasdorp Development Consortium – comprising of Asrin Property Developers, Harry Viljoen Properties, Jazonia Beleggings Trust and the Smith & Smith Group – is positive that they will deliver a superior retail solution for Bredasdorp and its surrounding Overberg communities.

The Pavilion, a 7,500sqm, 22 retail unit development, is located on a 1,5 hectare site and will serve as the first regional shopping centre in the Bredasdorp district. It will service neighbouring Napier, Arniston, Cape Agulhas and Struisbaai.

Bredasdorp is an agricultural town in the heart of the Overberg – known as South Africa's first "dorp". Wheat is grown on a large scale and other agricultural activities include canola, milk, and indigenous fynbos cultivation. The coastal towns of Arniston, Cape Agulhas and Struisbaai are popular with local holidaymakers and the De Hoop Nature Reserve draws both local and international tourists to the area.

"It will bring increased retail spend to the area and more importantly local money will stay here rather than be spent in other towns," says Danie Viljoen, spokesperson of the consortium.

According to Cape Agulhas executive major, Richard Mitchell, development in the town is rapid, with a number of prominent South African business franchises opening their doors in recent years. "The mall will bring a new experience for shoppers in our district where they will be able to do shopping under one roof. It will also create much needed jobs, which in turn will assist in alleviating poverty in the area," says Mitchell.

National tenants for The Pavilion have been secured, with a 3,000sqm Checkers store as the anchor tenant. Viljoen says lease agreements are also in place with Totalsports, Markham and Clicks.

Food offerings will include Wimpy, Debonaires, KFC, Ocean Basket and FishAways.
