New Boksburg mall to open in September

25 Mar 2013

Shoppers in Boksburg are in for a festival of fine food when Sunward Park shopping centre opens in September 2013.

Sunward Park will provide some 13 200 square metres of convenience and lifestyle shopping and dining in 27 stores. Other shops selected to meet the daily needs of this community include Postnet, MTN, Eyeland Optometrist and Hair Matters.

Sunward Park shopping centre will be anchored by a Checkers' ‘Blue Label’ store of over 4 100 square metres and a 3 000 square metre Food Lover’s Market. Together, these favourite South African retailers will dish up all the ingredients of an unmatched quality food shopping experience.

A veritable emporium of food, Sunward Park will be a delicious deli on the doorstep of one of the highest income areas in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, east of Johannesburg

Checkers will provide choice products of the highest quality, like Steakhouse Classic, Certified Natural Lamb, wines from over 80 of South Africa's top estates, the freshest fruit and vegetables, and more than 400 cheeses at the Checkers Cheese World.

Taking local kitchens by storm, Food Lover’s Market will create a theatre of food and shopping for the professional ‘foodie’, connoisseurs, and anyone who values exceptional quality and variety.

The stylish and modern Food Lover’s Market emporium at Sunward Park serves up everything that is fresh and fabulous in a wide variety of departments that cater to every taste. It will now be easy for shoppers to indulge in the fantastic foods used in the hottest international gourmet trends.

Graeme Liebenberg, Group Property & Business Development Manager for Food Lover’s Market, says Sunward Park is a high potential site for them as there are few high-quality retail malls in the area besides the East Rand Mall node.

He says as with all their stores, they will create an offering that Sunward Park customers are now unable to get in range, value and quality. “We will strive to make their retail food shopping fun and more of an adventure, rather than a hassle.”

Liebenberg confirms there is a big demand for a Food Lover’s type of retail offering in the area. He says Sunward Park is immediately surrounded by a high LSM residential area and it also has high-density middle and lower LSM markets nearby.

He explains that Sunward Park can service all demographic groups of South Africans, which is important to Food Lover’s Market with their wide consumer appeal.

According to the Checkers spokesperson, market research proved positive and they are excited about the prospect of bringing a new generation neighbourhood Checkers store to the doorstep of the people of Sunward Park.

Checkers continuously aims to help create jobs for, and contribute to, the economy of the communities in which it trades. In keeping with this approach, the new Checkers will create employment opportunities for about 160 people from the surrounds, comprising store staff and other contracted service related manpower.

“Being Africa’s largest supermarket retailer, the Shoprite Group of Companies believes that its success comes from offering all its customers well-known and trusted brands, as well as an extensive range of house brand items at the lowest prices available. Developing a modern Checkers supermarket, with all the usual service departments, will cater for all shoppers’ daily, weekly and monthly food and household requirements.”

Checkers Sunward Park will offer an extensive range of groceries, non-foods and service departments such as a bakery, fish, fruit and vegetable department, delicatessen, take-away, and butchery.

Its convenient Money Market counter will add value to the shopping experience as shoppers can buy event tickets, cell phone and Telkom phone cards, Lotto tickets, gift vouchers and bus and airline tickets. It also provides facilities to pay telephone, electricity and TV licence accounts, make SASSA withdrawals and money transfers to any Shoprite or Checkers store in South Africa. This means cost-effective, time-saving shopping and services under one roof.

Sunward Park will provide some 13 200 square metres of convenience and lifestyle shopping and dining in 27 stores. Other shops selected to meet the daily needs of this community include Postnet, MTN, Eyeland Optometrist and Hair Matters.

For the time-strapped shoppers, the centre will provide convenient dining and fast food with Nandos, McDonalds, Spur, Pizza del Forno, Fish and Chip Co, Biltong Hut and Montagu Dried Fruit and Nuts.

The Sunward Park development represents a R220 million investment by owners Netrac Investments. Retail Network Services is responsible for the retail dynamics of the centre.

Gavin Tagg of Retail Network Services says the residential community in the area are established middle to higher-income producers. He says their most important commodity is time, however, one-stop, quality convenience shopping is a need that isn’t adequately met in this community.

This will all change when Sunward Park opens later this year.

Tagg explains that within the eight kilometre radius catchment area of the Sunward Park centre, over 75 100 households were counted present in 2011. With a three percent projected population growth a year, there are now nearly 338 000 people living within this area.

“Well-known retailers have eagerly committed to Sunward Park based on the strong demographic profile of the catchment community and every retailer is specially selected to meet the daily retail needs of this community.”

Tagg says introducing retailers to the remaining new stores will be similarly in step with shoppers’ lifestyles. He says a few opportunities still exist for retailers which will complement the ideal tenant mix of the centre.

A big part of convenience shopping is a central location with easy access. This is exactly what Sunward Park will offer, at the major intersection of Trichard and Kingfisher roads. It also has over 1 000 convenient parking bays.
