Military veterans to get houses

28 Oct 2008
In a move to give support and economic assistance to military veterans, the Housing Committee of Minister and MECs (MinMEC) have approved the military veterans housing assistance programme.

Through this government initiative, the Department of Housing will assist and socially and economically integrate military veterans into society.

All qualifying military veterans who have not registered for their housing subsidies have until the 31 December 2008 to register with their respective military veterans associations who will then confirm their status with the Department of Defence, a statement said on Friday.

All military veterans are called upon to apply for government subsidised housing before 31 December 2008 in order to be given priority in the allocation of houses.

Since 1994 more than 10,000 veterans have registered for a housing subsidy and more than 1,500 subsidies have been allocated.

The department appealed to all veterans earning less than R3,500 a month who have not benefited from the government housing programme, which they qualify for, to approach their nearest provincial department.

Applicants are urged to bring with a copy of their green bar-coded South African ID and proof from the Department of Defence that they were military veterans.

The veterans will be afforded an opportunity to apply for three forms of housing such as ownership, rental and institutional housing to benefit from the government housing programme. - Luyanda Makapela, BuaNews
