Middle class likes KZN's Ashburton

04 Jan 2010
Ashburton near Pietermaritzburg is becoming increasingly popular among a new, up and coming middle class, including those buying property as second homes.

This spacious five-bedroom home set on two hectares in Ashburton is priced at R5,3m.

So says Barbara Becker, area principal for Pam Golding Properties (PGP), who adds that significant improvements made to such properties have seen homeowners considerably increase the value of their investments.

"With more and more home buyers seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, the safe country ambience of Ashburton, just 10 minutes from Pietermaritzburg and 80km from Durban, is becoming increasingly sought-after with an influx of buyers moving into the area," Becker says.

She says with three private schools – St John's and Epworth for girls and St Charles for boys as well as the University of KZN Pietermaritzburg Campus located close by - Ashburton is proving popular among those with families. In addition, it's easily accessible to the industries in the Shortts Retreat Road area of Mkondeni and close to the proposed new spatial development in Cato Ridge.

"Ashburton is an area where one pops in at the local butcher or grocer – who probably remembers your usual order – and yet it affords easy access to major shopping centres such as the Liberty Midlands Mall within 10 minutes and The Pavilion – just 25 minutes' drive away. Falling within a 90km radius from the new Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, Ashburton is a very suitable 2010 Soccer World Cup location for fans and supporters."
