Mall in KZN's Umlazi performs well

28 Aug 2008
The 2,600sq m SuperSpar anchoring the new Philani Valley shopping centre in Umlazi, Durban, drew record visitor numbers during the opening on 25 July.

According to SuperSpar there were between 12,000 and 15,100 people on the Friday and Saturday and 8,000 on the Sunday.

The shopping centre serves about 4,000 Umlazi-families in Wards U and Y, as well as residents across from thoroughfare 35 through to Isipingo.

Peter Sparks, executive director of SA Corporate, says these residents have always done their shopping in the Durban CBD, Isipingo en Propspecton, which meant a long ride by taxi, car or bus.

National tenants in the first phase of the centre respresent 75% of the space. Jet, Pep, Debonairs, Steers and OK Furnishers are among the tenants.

The second phase entails 2,000sq m, which will raise the total lettable space in the shopping centre to 12,930sq m.

A petrol station will be accommodated on separate premises.

This mall is part of SA Corporate's objective to expand its assets in underdeveloped areas. The company also owns Umlazi Mega City, which is situated six kilometres from Philani Valley, the Dube Village Mall in KwaMashu and the Hubyeni shopping centre in Limpopo. – Elma Kloppers, Sake24
