Makro heads for Polokwane

22 Nov 2010

Makro is set to open its first store in Limpopo in the middle of next year. The 15 000 sqm store is being built on a six hectare site near the Coca-Cola depot on Marmer Street, close to the Polokwane International Airport.

The bulk earthworks for the project are underway and Edilcon is due to start work on the structure in January next year. It is the 15thMakro store being developed for the retailer by Moolman Group.

“Makro Polokwane represents an important investment for the city and is a reflection of this region’s attractiveness as a retail centre with its growing economy and its consumer market,” says Jannie Moolman of Moolman Group.

He says its not surprising that Makro has chosen to set up its first store in Limpopo at Polokwane as the region has provided consistent growth that is above the national average. Roughly 10% of the province’s residents live in the city and its surrounding suburbs.

Doug Jones, Makro’s financial director claims that the new outlet has been designed to use less water and electricity than any of the other stores owned by the group.

“It is designed to produce fewer emissions and to make use of natural light inside the store,” he says.

The site will provide 850 parking bays for customers and Jones says the surrounding roads will be upgraded to make access to the centre easier.

Moolman claims that the residents of the city have warmly welcomed the development particularly as it will contribute to the growing local economy.

Moolman Group is responsible for developing the Mall of the North in Limpopo and has previously built three other Makro stores at Silverlakes, Wonderboom and Vanderbijlpark.
