Liberty Properties, a business unit of Liberty Holdings, is utilising its position and expertise in the property industry to provide much needed infrastructural support to a deserving school.
In collaboration with the Department of Education, Liberty Properties has identified Ibhongo Secondary School in Soweto as a school with facilities in need of refurbishment.
The school is benefiting from the company’s focus on sustainability within the broader Liberty Group focus on making a positive impact in education.
Liberty’s philosophy is that knowledge, both acquiring and sharing it over your lifetime, holds the key to progress, opportunity, entrepreneurship and innovation.
The company recognises the importance of a conducive learning environment and Liberty is committed to meeting the dire need for improved infrastructure in schools where poor facilities can become a barrier to learning.
Maurice Mdlolo, chief operating officer at Liberty Properties, explains that resource efficiency is high on their agenda and they have embarked on a project where materials salvaged from their various existing re-development sites are repurposed for utilisation in schools lacking certain facilities.
Mdlolo was at Ibhongo Secondary School recently to attend the official handover of the Certificate of Compliance for the electrical work recently carried out at the premises.
“Our Eastern Gauteng Facilities team installed a number of light fittings removed from Sandton City and Eastgate Shopping Centre during their upgrades.
“We also delivered and fitted a number of benches and dustbins, much needed in the learners’ recreational area and the value of the project is estimated to be in excess of R250 000.”
He says the project at the school is an ongoing one, with a number of reconditioned doors and carpets being prepared for installation.
"Our partnership with Ibhongo Secondary School is important to us for a number of reasons.
“Not only does it provide a deserving school with much needed up-cycled furniture and fittings, but it allows us to demonstrate our commitment to conducting business responsibly,” he adds.
