Liberty Promenade upgrade well underway

06 Jul 2010
Approximately 24,000sqm will be added to Liberty Promenade in Mitchells Plain at a cost of R450m, making it the largest shopping centre in a previously disadvantaged area in the Western Cape.

The additional 24,000sqm of new retail and entertainment space is currently under development. On completion of this phase, the entire retail space, including the extension, will total approximately 74,000sqm.

The planned extension will boast a new entertainment wing and food court with its own entrance, new stores, additional parking bays and more public facilities.

The proposed new food court will be a contemporary design with very generous proportions. Attention has been paid to introducing natural daylight through the use of extensive skylighting. A very detailed ceiling with accent lighting will be a feature of the double volume space.

Externally, the new additions will create a completely new face for the shopping centre. The proposed new entrance features include wind lobbies and external canopies, while the external areas will receive new paving and landscaping featuring indigenous trees and shrubs suited to the weather patterns of the surrounding area.

Construction on the planned re-alignment of Entrance 2 and 3, facing AZ Berman Ave is nearing completion. The construction of the new entertainment wing is also well under way and the installation of roof trusses has already commenced.

More than 600 holes were drilled for the foundation of the new entertainment wing, approximately 10 kilometres of electrical cabling has been installed and 700 metres of hoarding boards have been erected around the construction areas.

To date, 12 500 square metres of existing concrete has been excavated, 2,500 cubic metres of concrete has been crushed and recycled, and 4,500 cubic metres of unsuitable rubble has been removed from the site.

The project thus far, has seen, Group 5 the main contractor, lay 6,085 cubic metres of concrete, lay 690,000 bricks, ordered 610 cubic meters of sand and 130 tonnes of dry cement.

The project has generated opportunities for local subcontractors and suppliers. Local businesses and schools have also benefited by way of the donation of reusable items salvaged from the construction.

Liberty Promenade is owned by Liberty Group, managed by Liberty Properties and the development is being managed by Liberty Property Development.
