KwaZulu-Natal’s Winterton homes

22 Oct 2013

The quaint village of Winterton on KwaZulu-Natal’s Midlands Meander has been nominated as the province's best town to visit in this year's kykNET Kwela Town of the Year competition, with locals looking forward to a boost in tourism.

The region is also drawing an increasing number of new permanent residents who have succumbed to the spectacular setting in the foothills of the Drakensberg and the more leisurely lifestyle.

But, Tiffiny Hancock, senior property consultant at Harcourts Greenacres, says the benefits will extend well beyond Winterton.

She says the village is part of the Midlands Meander, a top favourite among tourists who come to sample the many attractions of the region, and it is also an important stop-over for tourists on their way to the Drakensberg or the coast.

Winterton's nomination will benefit the whole region and is expected to further boost tourism, which together with agriculture underpins the local economy, she says.

Meanwhile, the region is also drawing an increasing number of new permanent residents who have succumbed to the spectacular setting in the foothills of the Drakensberg and the more leisurely lifestyle. A growing number of people are relocating here from cities such as Pietermaritzburg and Durban to savour the rural lifestyle, she says.

“Village life is community-centred and tourists and residents alike are spoilt for choice when it comes to leisure.  Artists and artisans are dotted along the Meander and offer a wide variety of work for sale. Picnic spots abound, with the spectacular Howick Falls and Midmar Dam being popular choices.”

Hancock says a variety of water sports are accommodated at the Midmar Dam, the venue for the well-known annual swimming event. She says birdwatching opportunities are plentiful and scenic drives are a favourite weekend pastime while keen golfers have the opportunity to play a round or two in spectacular surroundings.

There is of course also a choice of excellent private schools in the area, including Hilton College, Michaelhouse and St Anne's, as well as good state schools, and this is a great attraction for high-income earners who want to settle their families in a rural environment.

Hancock says Howick, long a magnet for retirees, is now especially being targeted by businessmen from Pietermaritzburg because of the easy 25 kilometre commute to the city, but telecommuters who work from home often opt to settle in one of the more remote villages, such as Winterton.

Property prices in the area now range from about R500 000 for starter units up to about R4 million for upmarket homes in country or golf estates.
