Introducing Japandi: creating simple and elegant interiors

15 Nov 2017

Japandi is the meeting of two great aesthetics, Japanese and Scandinavian, in a perfect marriage that celebrates simplicity, elegant lines and odd shapes.

Think minimalism, with lots of natural light, open spaces, and a play on the perfection of imperfection. In fact, the style takes inspiration from ‘wabi sabi’, the principle of finding beauty in imperfection.

According to the head of Buying at Superbalist, Marina de Wet, you should be looking for clean lines, asymmetry, natural pale wood with darker finishes and accent pops of pastel pinks, greys and other muted undertones.

She says the look needs to be simple, which means minimal décor. She says picture a light wooden table with thin black metal legs, supporting a leafy house plant and an oriental accessory with an organic contour.

Introducing some elements from these styles into your space is both easy and affordable.

Marina shares some tips…

Casa tropicana

Freshening up your casa for summer may well be on your mind as the days get longer and the nights warmer. This sunshine-season, think Havana Nights with clashing colours, audacious prints, pretty throws and natural finishes.

Cuba was once home to Hemingway and is known for its colour blocking with brilliant bursts of blue, yellow, red and dusty pink. This Black Friday, look out for leafy plant prints to pair with shabby chic rugs and throws to achieve a winning look.

You don’t need much to bring Cuba to your home - a rug with a colourful pattern is a good start. Add to this bold scatter cushions, cacti, vivid accessories and tropical touches, and you’re ready for a fiesta.

Summer sun

Embrace summer by decorating your outdoor space using a selection of irresistible and quirky accessories designed to get you prepped for a party.

Nothing livens up a space quite like an inflatable cactus, giant watermelon beach ball or bass speaker.

No pool party is complete sans a unicorn float. This season, it’s about investing in a selection of functional-but-fun accessories that get the holiday feeling going, whether you’re relaxing inside or soaking up the sun.
