Improvon will support Meals on Wheels’ various community initiatives following the refurbishment of Reuven’s Old Age Home on Nelson Mandela Day.
Improvon, a leader in tailor-made commercial and Industrial property, donated building supplies, materials and fittings to help with the refurbishment and repairs to Reuven’s Old Age Home in the south of Johannesburg.
The day was dedicated to gardening, painting and repairing the property, as well as spending time with the residents of the home.
“It’s incredibly sad how many elderly people are simply lost and forgotten by their families and friends, despite the fact that they dedicated their lives to their children,” says Stefano Contardo of Improvon.
He says by becoming involved in this initiative, they hoped, in some small way, to ease the plight of the residents of Reuven and bring some comfort into their lives.
Reuven’s residents often just need a tuned ear or the gift of touch because they are extremely lonesome and sometimes even feel abandoned.
According to Michelle Wohlberg of Meals on Wheels they are faced with a variety of different cultures and therefore languages.
“Some people for example are Portuguese, Italian, French and from various African countries, they are often more isolated and would so much appreciate a visit or two during a month and sometimes even just a plate of food.
“We are mostly focused on interaction and would appreciate the emotional connection,” she says.
The lesson from Nelson Mandela Day is to get involved and do what you can to help humanity in honour of his birthday, but it doesn’t have to stop there.
Meals on Wheels is constantly doing projects such as this one, and the organisation has grown from the basic provision of meals to the elderly to 140 branches operating across the country, including service centres, frail care centers, soup kitchens, feeding schemes and crèches.
