Huge housing scheme for Soweto

26 Jul 2007
Members of Parliament were told on Wednesday that a major housing development is being planned for an area west of Soweto which will consist of 25,000 housing units.

Housing Minister Lindiwe Sisulu said in reply to a written question from ANC member Sisa Njikelana that the project is going to be one of the biggest ever initiated in Gauteng since the approval of the comprehensive plan for the creation of sustainable human settlements.

"The project will comprise mixed income, mixed design and mixed tenure housing options with a significant agriculture hub," she said.

The project is currently referred to as Doornkop Greenfields and is situated directly west of Soweto, north of Protea Glen and south of Slovoville.

It is located on 60 portions of publicly-owned land and 14 portions of private land. It is planned to integrate with Soweto physically, economically and socially.

The minister said there is an ongoing consultation process with all stakeholders including the local farmers. Forty nine farmers are expected to be affected, but all land purchases "will be based on the
willing-buyer-willing-seller principle," Sisulu said.

"Farmers will therefore be able to purchase alternative land with the proceeds of the sale, should they so wish."

The project is being planned by the Gauteng Housing Department in collaboration with the Johannesburg City Council, and the Johannesburg Property Company is entrusted with negotiations with landowners. The company was established as an independent company with a single shareholder, the City of Johannesburg.

It manages all the property assets of the city, and takes responsibility for maximising their social, economic and financial value. - By Michael Hamlyn, I-Net Bridge
