Fine & Country Sub-Saharan Africa’s (SSA) styling and staging specialists provide some tips for homeowners to elevate their outdoor areas into inviting and functional retreats, emphasising the essence of outdoor living.
Start with a vision - Before making any big changes or additions, take the time to envision how you want your outdoor space to look and feel. Consider factors such as your lifestyle, preferences, and the intended use of the space. Do you envision a cosy reading nook, a vibrant entertaining area, or a serene garden retreat? Having a clear vision will guide your design decisions and ensure coherence in your outdoor oasis.
Create defined zones - Just like indoor spaces, outdoor areas benefit from clearly defined zones for different activities. Divide your garden or patio into functional areas such as lounging, dining, cooking, and gardening. Use elements like outdoor rugs, pavers, or landscaping to delineate these zones while maintaining a cohesive design aesthetic.
Invest in quality furniture - Comfortable and durable outdoor furniture is essential for creating a welcoming outdoor retreat. Opt for high-quality pieces made from weather-resistant materials such as teak, aluminum, or synthetic wicker. Consider factors such as comfort, style, and functionality when selecting furniture pieces that will withstand the elements and provide years of enjoyment.
Incorporate natural elements - Embrace the beauty of the outdoors by incorporating natural elements into your oasis. Integrate lush greenery, flowers, and native plants to add texture, colour, and life to your space. Create visual interest with strategically placed planters, vertical gardens, or hanging baskets, and consider adding a water feature such as a fountain or pond for a soothing ambiance.
Enhance with lighting - Lighting plays a crucial role in extending the usability of your outdoor space into the evening hours. Illuminate pathways, seating areas, and landscaping features with a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting. Incorporate solar-powered lights, string lights, lanterns, or LED fixtures to create a warm and inviting atmosphere that enhances the beauty of your outdoor oasis.
Add comfort and cosiness - Elevate the comfort level of your outdoor retreat with cosy textiles and accessories. Invest in plush cushions, throw blankets, and outdoor rugs to create a seating area where you can relax and unwind. Consider adding a hammock, swing chair, or daybed for the ultimate relaxation spot, and don't forget to include shade options such as umbrellas, pergolas, or retractable awnings for relief from the sun.
Include entertainment options - Make your outdoor oasis a hub for entertainment and relaxation by incorporating various entertainment options. Install an outdoor kitchen or barbecue area for al fresco dining, set up a fire pit or outdoor fireplace for gatherings, and consider adding amenities such as a jacuzzi, outdoor sound system, or movie projector for added enjoyment.
Accessorise thoughtfully - Put the finishing touches on your outdoor oasis with thoughtfully curated accessories and decor. Incorporate decorative elements such as outdoor artwork, sculptures, or wind chimes to add personality and charm to your space. Arrange potted plants, candles, and lanterns to create visual interest and ambiance, and don't forget to include practical elements such as storage solutions and outdoor-friendly accents.

Wash walls, repaint, or create a feature
The most affordable way to upgrade your outdoor entertainment space is to clean up the exterior of the home. Hire a high-pressure hose and wash down all exterior walls – especially those that are visible from the outdoor entertainment area. If the walls are painted, touch up any cracks and repaint. Create a feature wall by choosing a bold colour to paint on just one section of the exterior; or, for those who are handy with power tools, a timber-cladded exterior feature wall can also do wonders when it comes to upgrading the look of the space.
Tackle simple maintenance issues
Nothing adds value more than a well-maintained, neat outdoor space. Clean out the gutters and fix any damaged outdoor pipes or drains. Get the roof professionally cleaned and make sure it is in good condition. Use a high-pressure hose to clean down any paving and repair any parts that are damaged. Tackle any weeding and prune overgrown hedges and trees.

Upcycle, recycle, or DIY
Adding a covered patio or outdoor entertainment area can create that much-needed extra space in which to entertain and relax; but these additions can be costly depending on what structure you decide to build. For a more affordable solution, find resources to upcycle, such as palette wood, that can be turned into a pergola with trailing plants that grow overtop to create natural shade. You can also make your own built-in fire pit using recycled materials such as an old washer drum. Instead of buying expensive outdoor furniture, add value to the home by building a concrete seating area around the fire pit.
If you do tackle a DIY project, Goslett warns homeowners to make sure that the addition is structurally sound and well-built. “A poorly built structure could otherwise decrease the resale value of the home,” he cautions.
