How to style a neutral sofa

18 Apr 2018

If you’re in the market for a new sofa, consider buying one in a neutral colour. You also want to shop around for a couch with clean lines and modern designs.

Today's sofas come in a range of neutral hues, from cream to beige, and all the way through to grey. And while these tend to be a bit boring when left unstyled, by using cushions in solid colours, luxurious textures and patterns, you can transform a bland sofa into chic seating without spending a fortune. Here’s how…

1. Mix it up

A neutral sofa provides the perfect blank canvas for decorative cushions. And there are so many options to choose from. If you’re conservative, then opt for cushions in a single colour. However, if you’re bold, you can combine colours for a trendy statement.

Want to try something different? Use contrasting colours such as red and blue, or navy and blush pink to create an eye-catching arrangement.

You can also tie colours into your overall décor scheme by choosing cushions with complementary shades or hues from the same colour swatch.

Add visual interest to a neutral sofa by layering colour, texture and pattern. When using monochromatic or neutral colours, you can add visual interest by adding accent cushions to complete the look.

2. Think about scale

Keep in mind that choosing cushions for your sofa isn't just about picking colourful cushions, it’s also about creating an inviting backdrop with cushions of different sizes.

If you prefer to set up an arrangement of interesting patterns, select large and small patterns to ensure that you stick to scale and have a balanced look. And don't be afraid to introduce some texture too. Adding a cushion with a luxurious texture to the mix will make your cushion arrangement standout so play around with a few ideas. Consider including faux fur, knitted or crochet cushions, or suede and velvet.

3. Set the mood

You can also use decorative cushions to adjust the mood in a room. For example, use warm colours for winter and cool hues for summer.

Earth-toned colours and warm reds are the ideal palette for winter because you can use these to create a cosy living room.
