How to spray paint your fridge

13 Jan 2016

With so much emphasis being placed on recycling, reusing and restoring, giving your fridge or freezer a makeover is just one way to extend its life so that it doesn't end up on the rubbish dump.

When spraying your fridge, light, even coats are important. If you stand too close or spray too much, you will end up with runs and drips.

The Rust-Oleum range of spray paints includes Appliance Epoxy for appliances.

Spray the inside of your fridge with Rust-Oleum Protective Gloss Enamel and the outside with Appliance Epoxy.

1. It is best to do the spray painting outdoors, and be sure to choose a day that is not too windy.

2. Put down a drop cloth or sheets of old newspaper to keep from messing your paving. Once you’re done, place the individual fridge shelves and trays on the cloth for painting.

3. If you can't remove the handles, cover them with masking tape.

4. It is important to apply a light coat of paint at a time - you can always touch up any missed areas when you apply the second coat. Apply the second coat of spray paint once the first coat has completely dried, and once both coats are applied, let them dry before turning over and spray painting the other side of the shelves.

5. Before you start on the actual fridge, you need to give the appliance a good scrub. You can use sugar soap or any heavy degreaser to remove every trace of dirt and grime.

6. If there are scratches or rust on the bottom of the fridge, start off the sanding with a 120-grit sandpaper and finish off with a 220-grit sandpaper.

7. To get your fridge clean, use a vacuum cleaner on the back of the unit where it tends to collect a lot of dust.

8. Lightly sand the exterior finish with a 220-grit sandpaper. A Random Orbit Sander is the best way to do this for an even finish.

9. When spraying the refrigerator, only spray light, even coats over the surfaces. Starting at the top or bottom, spray from left to right from a distance of 30 centimetres from the surface.
