How to create more space in a small bathroom

05 Oct 2017

Barely have enough room to stand in your bathroom? Here’s how to increase your sense of space without breaking the bank.

1. Don’t clutter the floor

Balancing the need for storage and extra leg room is not easy in a small bathroom.

To maximise the space, remove everything from the floor. Instead of having a traditional vanity that stands on its own, opt for a floating unit. Do the same for the basin and toilet.

Being able to glimpse more of the floor will give your bathroom a little bit more breathing space, which makes all the difference when you’re feeling cramped.

2. Get the best of both worlds

If you don’t have enough room to build a walk-in shower, you should consider a bath-shower combination which is cheaper and more practical to build then knocking down the walls.

To give your new bathroom a contemporary look and expand the sense of space and light, get yourself a frameless shower screen which is both stylish and practical.

3. Be creative with your storage

Although bathtubs are a routine bathroom feature, they don’t always get used. This is why some homeowners are opting to lose the tub altogether.

With the bathtub out of the way, you’ll have room for extra storage. Use the available space to create a niche wall where you can organise your shampoo, bath soaps, candles, incense and towels. The niche works well in this scenario because it creates a sense of depth and gives the illusion of space.

If you’re not a fan of open shelving, you can use the space for an inset cabinet which not only provides much needed storage but some elbow room too.

4. Customise your vanity

Finding a readymade vanity that will fit into a tight bathroom may seem like an impossible task.

In an ideal world, where money is not an issue, you can have it custom-made to fit your space and lifestyle needs. You could have it designed in any way you want.

A stylish cabinet will help draw attention away from the lack of space and focus the attention on its beautiful hardware and finishes.

5. Bring in some light

A cramped bathroom that has no windows feels heavy and gloomy.

Adding LED downlights is not only an energy-efficient solution but it also lights up wet areas and provides task lighting around the bathroom sink.

Bathrooms with no windows can also benefit from ambient lighting. Mount a pair of sconces on either side of the mirror to offset the harsh overhead lights. These tend to show you in a more flattering light.

If money is not an issue, you can have a skylight installed. The natural light coming in from above will draw the eye up, creating a sense of a more open bathroom. – Katlego Sekano
