How to create a tranquil haven

23 Sep 2024

In today’s fast-paced world where constant engagement and the expectation of 24/7 productivity have become the norm, it’s more important than ever that home should be a true sanctuary; a place where we can escape the stresses of daily life, recharge and connect with our loved ones.

“Creating a calm and peaceful environment for your family is crucial for both mental and physical well-being,” says Yael Geffen, CEO of Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty.

“A calm home has multiple benefits; reduced stress fosters better communication, reduces anxiety, and helps improve focus and sleep and, as a result, relationships are strengthened, productivity increases, and overall happiness will improve.

“Children, in particular, thrive in environments that promote tranquillity as it can help them to manage their emotions, perform better academically, and develop healthy coping mechanisms.

“But, ultimately, when every member of the family feels at ease in their home, it strengthens family bonds and promotes a sense of security.”

Geffen says that creating a tranquil home is much simpler than you’d think, with some of the practical tips she shares below costing nothing more than time and effort:

  1. Declutter to Create Space and Order

Clutter is often one of the biggest contributors to stress in the home and studies have shown that disorganised and cluttered spaces can lead to feelings of overwhelm and anxiety. A clutter-free home not only looks more inviting but also provides mental clarity, helping you and your family relax more easily.

The first step to a calm home environment is therefore decluttering each room and removing items that no longer serve a purpose or add value to your life. Begin with one space at a time, working through areas like closets, drawers, and countertops and consider donating, selling, or recycling items that are rarely used.

Adopt a ‘less is more’ philosophy. Be intentional with the items you keep, focusing on functionality and sentimental value.

  1. Use Calming Colours and Natural Light

The colours in your home can have a significant impact on the mood and atmosphere. Soft, muted tones like light blues, greens and beige can promote calmness, while bright or bold hues can stimulate energy and excitement. For living spaces, bedrooms, and common areas, choose soothing colours that encourage relaxation.

Natural light also plays a key role in creating a peaceful environment. Allow as much sunlight as possible to enter your home, as exposure to natural light boosts mood, energy levels, and sleep quality. If privacy or weather conditions limit natural light, use soft, warm lighting throughout the house, and consider adding mirrors to reflect light and make rooms feel more open.

Avoid harsh fluorescent lighting, and instead opt for LED lights with adjustable settings to create a cosy, calming ambiance in the evenings.

  1. Incorporate Nature and Plants

Bringing elements of nature indoors is an effective way to create a calming atmosphere. Research suggests that simply being around greenery helps reduce anxiety and promotes a sense of tranquillity.

Houseplants are especially good additions for a calming atmosphere as they can improve air quality, reduce stress, and enhance well-being. Place plants in high-traffic areas like the living room or kitchen to help everyone feel more connected to nature, even when indoors.

You can also use natural materials like wood, stone, and bamboo in furniture, decorations, or even wall finishes to create a grounding and serene environment.

  1. Create Designated Quiet Zones

In a busy household, it can be helpful to establish designated quiet zones where family members can retreat when they need a moment of peace. Whether it's a cosy reading nook, a meditation corner, or a comfy spot on the porch, creating specific areas where family members can relax or practice mindfulness can significantly contribute to a calm home environment.

For children, having a quiet space can help them manage emotions and take a break when they feel overwhelmed. Adults can also benefit from a private corner to read, journal, or simply sit in silence to destress after a long day.

Make these quiet zones as inviting as possible with soft cushions, blankets, and calming scents like lavender or eucalyptus to enhance relaxation.

  1. Maintain a Routine for Consistency and Peace

Chaos in the home often stems from inconsistent routines, which can contribute to stress and anxiety so establishing a predictable routine helps both children and adults feel more secure and grounded. Whether it's a morning ritual, mealtime schedule, or bedtime routine, having a consistent flow to daily activities creates a sense of order and peace.

Start with small changes, such as setting a regular time for family meals or a nightly family wind-down routine. Ensure that the routine is balanced, allowing for work or school responsibilities but also incorporating time for rest, hobbies, or family bonding.

Involve the whole family in creating the routine. When everyone is on board, it’s easier to stick to, and each member feels more connected to the shared schedule.

  1. Minimise Noise for a Quiet Atmosphere

Noise pollution can disrupt a peaceful home environment, especially in households with multiple family members. Reducing background noise helps everyone focus, relax, and enjoy time together without distraction.

To minimise noise, start by limiting the use of loud electronics like televisions or speakers in communal areas. Set boundaries around “quiet hours” in the home, especially during times when family members need to rest or concentrate. Consider adding soft furnishings like rugs, curtains, or upholstered furniture to absorb sound and create a quieter environment.

  1. Assess Your Sleeping Environment

A calm sleeping environment is essential for a good night’s sleep and sufficient sleep is paramount for both mental and physical wellness. The number one rule is not to bring your work into the bedroom and children and teens should also have a cut off time, preferably handing in their devices for charging in another room. Other ways to make your bedrooms more conducive to good sleep include is investing in blackout curtains or blinds and setting up dimmer switches.

Equally important is eliminating distractions at bedtime and Ariana Huffington, author of The Sleep Revolution, recommends that you remove all devices from the bedroom at least five minutes before you plan on going to sleep and charge them outside the bedroom, although she personally strives for 30.

  1. Encourage Mindfulness and Relaxation Practices

Finally, creating a calm home environment involves promoting habits and practices that support mental well-being. Encourage mindfulness and relaxation techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or yoga as part of your family's daily routine. Incorporating these activities can help everyone manage stress and stay present in the moment, fostering a calmer, more peaceful household.

Family members of all ages can participate in mindfulness practices, even if it's as simple as a few minutes of deep breathing or quiet reflection each day. Introduce mindfulness activities gradually, and make it a shared family experience, perhaps by doing a simple meditation or gratitude practice together.

“Creating a calm home environment is about more than just aesthetics; it's about fostering a space where each family member feels relaxed, centred, and at peace. With a little effort and intention, you can easily turn your home into a serene retreat for the entire family".
