Once a farmer, always a farmer. Hemp and cannabis farming are set for a boost as President Cyril Ramaphosa says the government will ease policies for this sector to help create jobs.
The policy changes are part of the much-needed job creation plans announced by the president in his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday evening. According to Ramaphosa, this industry could create as many as 130 000 new jobs. The plan is to streamline the regulatory requirements, noting the successes experienced in neighbouring countries such as Lesotho.
South Africa decriminalised the private use of cannabis in 2018, however the Cannabis for Private Purposes Bill introduced in September 2020, is set to further outline rules and regulations around its production.
