Flagship Food Lover’s Market opens

17 Nov 2010

A new flagship 4 000 sqm Food Lover’s Market has opened in the new section of Pretoria’s Woodlands Boulevard. It is the biggest Food Lover’s Market in South Africa.

The 71 000 sqm extension at Woodlands Boulevard will cost R440-million and makes it one of the largest shopping centres in the capital city.

The store was conceptualised and designed by the in-house design team at Fruit & Veg City, which owns the brand. The ecologically-friendly store uses solar panels to heat water in the geysers and even has solar-powered lights to reduceenergy consumption within the store.

Sandro Gastaldi, owner of the Woodlands Food Lover’s Market says that high quality fresh fruit and vegetables remain the focal point for the store but it has the added benefit of providing a fishmonger, a large gourmet butchery, a biltong island, in-house bakery and even a resident chocolatier.

The store offers a wide range of prepared foods, has an extensive delicatessen where a wide variety of local international meats and cheeses are on sale. The Woodlands store is the only one in South Africa to have a stone-ground mill that will grind certified organic beans, seeds, legumes and cereals so people can make their own ingredients, from specialised flour to freshly-ground coffees.

Gastaldi says the store also offers an extensive range of freshly-prepared meals that people can combine and then take home with them to eat at their leisure. Known as the Hot Food Emporium the food comprises everything from roasted joints or lasagnes and pastas.

There is also its La Cucina counter that provides a variety of takeaways including pizzas and paninis. Added to this is a Tapa’s Bar with a selection of Spanish food and an Eastern Fusion bar (selling a variety of Asian foods, including sushi).
