Feeling cramped? Redesign your small bedroom with these 5 budget-friendly tips

01 Oct 2020

With the amount of time that you spend in the room, your bedroom should be the one place in a home where you love to kick-back and relax - a space you enjoy and one that offers you comfort and convenience.

The perfect bedroom should almost be a version of a boutique hotel bedroom, where all your 'needs' and more than a few 'wants' are catered for. So for those looking to redesign their small bedroom and make this space a priority, we offer a few tips that will assist you in redesigning the space whether your budget is small or you want to splurge and go for an all-out change.

Try these suggested, budget-friendly tips:

1. Give it a new look

One of the ways to redesign a bedroom without spending a cent is simply changing the current layout of furniture in the bedroom.

Before you go ahead and do this, make sure to take everything out of the room. Emptying the room is a great way to sort through what is in there and whether or not it is needed - this de-cluttering process will clear the room of excess items and immediately give you more space to move and plan around.

Placing the bed in front of a window used to be considered a no-no, but nowadays anything goes and why not make use of a space that is normally not used.

Having said that, if your bed looks good in front of the window, replace any shabby curtains with a new set of curtains, or add a Roman or Venetian blind to finish off the look.

2. Give the illusion of space

In many small bedrooms, there is just no getting away from the fact that it is small. If this is the case with your bedroom, then you need to use a few illusions or interior decorators’ magic tricks to make the room appear larger than it is. This is where mirrors come into play and can be used to lighten up a dark bedroom or visually enlarge the space.

Placing a mirror opposite a window bounces light around the room and will instantly lift a dark bedroom - the bigger the mirror, the better.

If you don't fancy the idea of mirrors on walls, or your landlord won't allow you to even hammer in a single nail, make a frame for a floor-mounted mirror, or buy one that is ready-made.

3. Keep the colour scheme simple

In a small bedroom, it's easier to keep the colour palette as simple as possible with neutral hues and then adding a splash of colour with accessories.

Just as clutter can make a room feel smaller, so does too many colours.

A room filled with muted colours and one of two accent colours will soothe and calm down the setting, which is exactly as it should be in the bedroom.

4. Consider proportion

Too often, people tend to overlook the small size of a bedroom and buy furniture that is far too large for the space.

While there's nothing wrong with wanting a king-size bedroom - is there enough space for it? Will there be any room left over for a bedside table or two? Will there be other furniture in the bedroom?

This is where proportion needs to be considered, large furniture may take up more space than you have.

5. Raise the bar around you

It's easy to only focus on the floor space around you - but don't forget it's possible to give your room a lift by opting for a hanging night stand, mounted shelving or floating bedside lighting. This will also help to make use of a small space effectively.

And then just for added effect and decadence - why not make your ceiling a statement piece too - but remember to keep it light to open up the space.
