Hundreds of families forced off the land at Jansenville and Waterford in the Great Karoo will have a choice of financial compensation or being given land and the means to start farming.
The Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform Gugile Nkwinti made the announcement when he handed over land from the Wayside farm at Waterford to victims of forced removals yesterday.
Nkwinti said that his department had R900-million to spend on helping emerging farmers become successful commercial farmers.
According to Nkwinti, land will be given to those people who wanted to start farming while financial compensation would be paid to people who were settled in urban areas and did not want to farm.
He said that once compensation was paid the people would have no further claim against the government.
Referring to those who chose to start farming, Nwinti said that they would be given land and then receive the technical and material support that would allow them to make a success of their farming venture.
Most of the farms around Jansenville focus on sheep and goat farming although there has been some increase in game farming in the area as well.
