So, the JHB Development Agency wants to introduce benches in streets leading to Ellis Park, as well as safety and security measures?
Well, once upon a time,
Johannesburg with its parks and streets had ample benches for the weary to rest their feet and enjoy fresh air.
Bus shelters also had benches. The city was in fact safe and secure.
So, what happened next? Benches were removed from streets and bus shelters because vagrants took over, and slept on them or they were vandalised.
This photo shows a
Parktown bus shelter turned into a cosy little abode by a homeless/vagrants, complete with groundsheet, bath-rug, suitcase and cardboard boxes, outside
Roseneath Primary School, Queen's Rd. corner Empire Rd. In the mornings, commuters waited for the bus in the street while Mr Vagrant slept in the bus shelter a stone's throw away from
Hillbrow Police Station).
Therefore, what exactly does JDA think will happen this time? Until the city solves its homeless and vagrant problem, benches will once again be requisitioned as 'dormitory facilities'.
And what exactly does this catch-all phrase "Safety and Security Measures" really mean? A somewhat vague general statement.....
Efforts to beautify streets, improve lightning, caring for environment, are of course, to be congratulated.
Respectfully yours,
