Elevate your home's style with art

14 Nov 2024

Hanging art is one of the easiest ways to elevate your home’s style – and it does not need to cost a fortune. Creating a well-curated art display isn’t just about buying expensive pieces. It’s about choosing items that resonate with you and arranging them in ways that enhance your interior design.

As an award winner of the Luxury Lifestyle Awards 2024, RE/MAX of Southern Africa is well placed to share some insights on how to make a home feel more luxurious through strategic art installations. The brand explains that a well curated gallery wall has the power to give any home a designer-level aesthetic.

To get started, first plan your layout by arranging the pieces on the floor or use some brown wrapping paper and some Prestik to map it out on the wall. According to RE/MAX SA, curated interiors often balance formal, symmetrical arrangements with more casual, asymmetrical displays. When planning your art layout, consider how to play into this principle. For instance, hang two pieces of artwork side by side for symmetry over a console, and stagger artwork in the passageway to create a more relaxed, laid-back vibe.

Once you have your layout, choose a theme for your gallery wall, like black-and-white photography, botanical prints, or abstract art. Keep in mind that the right frame can elevate even inexpensive art. Choose frames that complement both the artwork and your interior style.

In addition to creating a gallery wall, it is also a good idea to invest in one or two large statement artworks. Bigger pieces anchor a room and make a bold impression, giving your space an upscale feeling.

As a top tip, RE/MAX SA reminds homeowners that artwork can be hung throughout the home – including the bathroom. The power of effectively placed bathroom décor is often overlooked. Simply adding a good piece of art can take a drab and boring bathroom to the next level.

If you are renting and your lease prohibits drilling holes into walls, you do not have to resolve yourself to living with bare wall. You could use adhesive hooks, strips, or even wire hanging systems that don’t require nails. These options hold well and can be removed without damaging the walls.

“Adding artwork to your home not only personalises the space, but it also increases the home’s overall appeal to potential buyers when you one day decide to sell. In fact, when staging a home, artwork is often added to improve the overall aesthetics and achieve a higher sales price," recommends Adrian Goslett, Regional Director and CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa.

Yael Geffen, CEO of Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty offers the following tips for implementing whimsical décor effectively:

  • Choose a Focal Point: Start with a central piece that sets the tone for the room. This could be a statement piece of furniture, a bold piece of artwork or a vibrant rug. The focal point should be eye-catching and reflect the whimsical spirit you want to achieve.
  • Be Bold with Colours: Whimsical décor thrives on bold, vibrant colours so don’t be afraid to mix and match hues. Consider using a bright palette, incorporating cheerful yellows, playful pinks and lively blues. Balance these with neutral tones to avoid overwhelming the space.
  • Mix Patterns and Textures: Use a variety of patterns and textures to add depth and interest. Polka dots, stripes, florals, and geometric designs can coexist harmoniously in a whimsical setting. Mixing materials like plush fabrics, metallic finishes, and wooden accents can further enhance the eclectic vibe.
  • Incorporate Quirky Accessories: Look for unique and whimsical accessories that tell a story or evoke a sense of fun. This could include vintage toys, eclectic art pieces, or whimsical clocks. Animal-shaped lamps, fairy lights, and unusual planters can add character and charm.
  • Furniture with Character: Select furniture pieces that stand out for their design and personality. A brightly coloured sofa, an antique armchair with a unique pattern, or a coffee table with an interesting shape can all contribute to the whimsical atmosphere.
  • Embrace Nature: Nature-inspired elements are often a key component of whimsical décor, and indoor plants, floral motifs, and nature-themed decorations can bring a fresh, organic feel to the space. Consider hanging planters, flower vases, or even a nature-themed mural.
  • Create Cosy Nooks: Designate small areas in your home as cozy nooks for reading, relaxing, or daydreaming. Fill these spaces with comfortable seating, soft colourful pillows, and whimsical décor elements like fairy lights or a dreamy canopy.
  • Personalise with DIY Projects: Whimsical décor is perfect for DIY enthusiasts. Personalise your space with handmade crafts, upcycled furniture, or custom art. These personal touches add authenticity and uniqueness to your décor.
  • Innovative Lighting: Creative lighting can enhance the whimsical feel of a room. Think chandeliers with a twist, string lights, or lamps with fun shapes and colours. Lighting can create magical ambiances that transform and elevate the mood of a space.
