Ekurhuleni's annual Women's Day walk

01 Aug 2012

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) invites residents to participate in the annual Walk Against Abuse on 9 August as a Women's Day celebration event.

The Walk Against Women, Men and Children Abuse is an initiative by EMM, Gauteng Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture and Wings of Change.

EMM spokesperson Sam Modiba says this is also an initiative by the metro to encourage residents to remember what the women of 1956 fought for, although the cause now is different.

The 6km walk, now in its second year, aims to create awareness on matters of domestic abuse within Ekurhuleni communities and will take place at the Sam Ntuli Stadium in Tokoza on 9 August.

“Silence is the best ally to domestic abuse and through this walk, EMM and its partners are encouraging men, women and children to speak out and break the cycle,” says Modiba.

The Walk Against Women, Men and Children Abuse is an initiative by EMM, Gauteng Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture and Wings of Change.

Modiba says the women of 1956 took power back into their own hands when they marched against pass laws, and now the metro is saying the women of 2012 should do the same.

The walk will start at 9am from Sam Ntuli stadium and will be followed by a family fun day.

Everyone is welcome to participate and entrance is free. For more information contact Velile Dhlamini on 074 175 2875 or Hasane Maluleke on 082 361 9024.
