Founded in 1872, East London is not only home to one of the countries’ largest manufacturing centres, but also to a number of beaches, offering those who live and work there the best of both worlds.
This is according to Cicilia Janse van Rensburg, Leapfrog franchisee, who says East London offers good value for money for both sectional title and freehold properties.
“Our biggest issue at the moment is getting enough stock to meet buyer demand - specifically in the under R2 million market.”
Janse van Rensburg says the average price for a sectional title homes is currently around R674 000, while freehold properties tend to start from around R644 000. She says freestanding homes are still the buyers’ favourite.
When it comes to new developments, there is constantly something new in East London and surrounding areas, says Janse van Rensburg.
One of the recent developments is the Gonubie Palms. All dwellings in this gated estate are sold on a turnkey basis with prices ranging from R750 000 to R955 000. Then there is Calypso Garden, a development in Haven Hills, with properties on offer from R491 200 to R789 450, she says.
While those not familiar with the area might associate it only with DaimlerChrysler SA, Mercedes-Benz, Johnson & Johnson and possibly as the birthplace of former Proteas wicketkeeper, Mark Boucher, East London actually has a lot to offer in terms of scenic nature reserves, as well as being the home of the renowned Ironman 70.3 triathlon.
Formula One fans will love the East London Grand Prix Circuit (formerly the Prince George Race Circuit) where international champion Jody Scheckter began his career. Golfers will be spoiled for choice with no less than eight golf clubs operating in the area, one of which is the Fish River Sun golf course designed by Gary Player.
Nature lovers can also expect a treat as East London has a temperate climate, beaches, and a number of game reserves including the Inkwenkwezi Private Game Reserve and the Mpongo Private Game Reserve.
Janse van Rensburg says she has been amazed at everything the area has to offer. “It really is a great place to raise a family and the property market proffers good value for money.”
