You can save a lot of water by changing your flush mechanism to a dual-flush one.
Builders Warehouse shares a 12-step guide for doing it yourself:
Step 1
Turn off the tap and flush the toilet to empty the cistern.
Step 2
Unscrew the flush button.
Step 3
Place a container underneath the inlet valve to catch any water overflow, then disconnect the inlet valve. Remove the cistern screws.
Step 4
Carefully remove the cistern and tip any remaining water into the toilet bowl. Place the cistern on a towel to prevent it from scratching.
Step 5
Use water pump pliers to unscrew the flush mechanism at the bottom of the cistern. Then remove the old flush mechanism.
Step 6
Place the new rubber seal onto the end of the new flush mechanism.
Step 7
Insert the new flush mechanism into the cistern.
Step 8
Secure the nut underneath the cistern and tighten with water pump pliers.
Step 9
Replace the foam ring and then place the cistern on top.
Step 10
Use a spirit level to ensure the cistern is level when replacing the cistern screws.
Step 11
Place the new flush button in the cistern lid and screw to tighten. You will need to set the length of the plastic rods so that they just touch the red and green plungers, then break off the excess.
Step 12
Reconnect the inlet value and turn on the tap so the cistern can fill. The dual-flush mechanism is ready to use.
