Developer ups the 'green' stakes

12 Jun 2008
KZN property developer the eLan Group has made application to the KZN Biodiversity Stewardship Programme for three of its development sites.

The Programme is a national initiative with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife championing its implementation in KZN and gives private and communal landowners the opportunity to play an important role in the conservation of the country's natural heritage.

The Stewardship Programme is a new way of achieving conservation protection by supporting private landowners in managing and protecting the natural assets in their care. Programme Manager, Kevin McCann said the response to the initiative has been "beyond our wildest dreams". "We started off with eight pilot sites and have an order to cover a further 40 properties in the province," he said.

"The eLan Group is totally committed to conservation and we believe that maintaining a balance in the environment is of the utmost importance," said eLan Land and Conservation Manager, Peter Coulon.

The Programme operates on three levels offering various options to landowners. Level One is an informal mechanism with no legal contracts and applies to landowners who want to conserve natural systems on their land. Level Two is divided further to sites that have biodiversity features identified as important to the state or those that are declared a protected environment. Level Three applies to areas that are to be declared a nature reserve and managed accordingly. The third level is the most restrictive.

The eLan Group will enter the Programme on Level Two for three of their development sites; Avenol Country Estate and New Forest Fly Fishing Estate in the KZN Midlands and Blythedale Coastal Resort on the North Coast. McCann said, "The eLan Group is a significant landholder which means we will be working on big sites and making a meaningful contribution to conservation."
