Designing a living room without a sofa

28 Sep 2017

There are a number of reasons why a sofa may not suit your lifestyle. For instance, you may be short on space or might like to try something totally different like sitting on the floor.

Whatever the case may be, you can still create a beautiful and functional space using unique seating options.

1. Encourage conversation

If conversation is the order of the day, chic armchairs arranged around a coffee table are the way to go.

You might also like to add an ottoman or two to fill in the gaps between the armchairs. These you can use as side tables or extra seating without taking up too much visual space.

If you’re using a round coffee table, opt for chairs with curved lines to create a cohesive and complementary space.

2. Cuddle and lay back

Coming up with alternative seating arrangements is so much easier when you don’t have to accommodate a fireplace or TV.

No TV, no fireplace? Perfect. Without these two in the way, you can be as creative as you want with your layout.

Create a ‘cuddle pit’ using a set of chaise lounges and place them parallel to one another. These can be used as instant day beds so you can lay back and take a load off your feet, share a nap or take in the view outside.

3. Incorporate optional viewing

If your family can’t seem to agree about TV viewing, then the optional viewing option is for you.

Instead of having the TV in its usual position, mount it to the side so that those who want to view it can turn in their chairs and do so.

For this, you’ll need some flexibility, so why not look into a chaise lounge with no back, also known as a recamier, so you can adjust your position accordingly.

4. Embrace the fireplace

It’s not often that you’ll find chairs facing away from a fireplace but it’s possible. You can do the same by placing an armchair on either side of the fireplace. You can also mix up your chair choices, using an armchair on one side and a chaise lounge on the other.

Bring in a side table to place near a chair and a coffee table to place at the centre of your arrangement. This will give your space a complete and welcoming look.

5. Scatter some bean bags

Bean bags have received a style upgrade. Believe it or not, the colourful, comfy but saggy bean bag has evolved into a chic chair, suitable for adult life.

From luscious velvet to plush faux lambskin, leather, pretty florals, patterns to unexpected shapes, bean bags are replacing the traditional sofa because they are cheaper and fun.

6. Grab a seat on the floor

If cool and casual is what you’re looking for, then why not look into low seating?

To enjoy this bohemian-style setup, neatly arrange cushions, poufs, cubes or rugs on the floor. You can also incorporate floor seating with backs, and add a coffee or side table for drinks and snacks.

This quirky living room arrangement is ideal for adventurous homeowners who still have the strength to get up from the floor and it’s safe for little ones who like climbing on furniture. – Katlego Sekano
