Brickfield Road,
Durban, was chosen as the location for First National Bank's new Beach Branch office.
A deal was brokered which saw Basil Manning vacate their old shop and relocate to new premises at
Umgeni Business Park while the Brickfield Road site was earmarked for the
FNB building.
The architect was hired to design the new building according to FNB specs, and with all involved giving the combined thumbs up to his plans, construction began.
The R15m two-storey, 1,600sq m building at 42/46 Brickhill Road offers abundant parking and is now almost complete with FNB planning to start operations there in the middle of this month. The Beach Branch will move from its long-standing premises at the corner of West Street and Gillespie Street.
Russell Scorer of MaxProp said the old Basil Manning structure comprised two wood and iron sheds held up by poles embedded in cement-filled "44-gallon drums".
The building, which previously housed panel-beating firm, Banrust, was more than 100 years old so it had to be moved piece by piece to a storage site for an assessment of its historical value.
