Located in Mogale City, the super-regional Cradlestone Mall opened on 20 November with close to 200 retail stores and 4 500 parking bays. It was inspired by the World Heritage Site of the Cradle of Humankind.

Cradlestone Mall is situated at the intersection of the N14 and R28 highways and Hendrik Potgieter Road, maximising its accessibility from major roads and highways as well as benefiting from good traffic flow.

Measuring 76 000 square metres, the mall is owned and developed by Sasol Pension Fund, Pivotal Property Fund and Retail Africa.

Anchor tenants include Woolworths, Pick n Pay, Checkers, Game with FoodCo, Dion Wired and the Edcon Group, with Food Lovers Market and Dischem due to open stores in early 2014.

Shoppers came from neighbouring areas including Krugersdorp, Roodepoort, Randpark Ridge and even further afield to take advantage of retail offerings and the added convenience of the R60 million that developers invested in improving the roads surrounding the mall, according to the owners.

Internet Solutions and AlwaysOn are sponsored 30 minutes of mall-wide Wi-Fi and one hour of Wi-Fi in the Food Court as part of the launch of the mall.

According to Hayden Lamberti of Internet Solutions, Cradlestone Mall is the first retail site with a full carrier-grade wireless network.

“It represents the first small step in the next journey of Internet Solutions toward creating a society with access to high-speed and ubiquitous wireless bandwidth,” he says.

Andries Schaap, general manager investment from Sasol Pension Fund, says Cradlestone Mall’s appealing shopping, unique fresh design, easy access, entertainment, leisure and total experience make it an exciting prospect for shoppers from across the region, and beyond.

Jannie Kruger (Retail Africa), Andries Schaap (general manager, Sasol Pension Fund) and the Executive Mayor of Mogale City, Councillor Koketso Calvin Seerane.

“Backed by modern technology, convenience and comprehensive choice, Cradlestone Mall offers a complete and appealing experience for all shoppers,” says Schaap.

Councillor Koketso Calvin Seerane, Executive Mayor of Mogale City welcomed the mall opening, pointing out that the super-regional mall will be a catalyst for developments in the area.

He says while the mall will bring a much needed quality retail offering, during construction, the mall created 3 000 jobs and 2 000 permanent jobs have been created as the mall opened.

Seerane says there are plans for residential properties in the area following the mall development - all this represents a city that supports and encourages development and community upliftment.

He says in 2012, Mogale City attracted in excess of R2 billion in investments, noting that the city has seen new developments, such as the expansion of Silverstar Casino for example.

Seerane adds that Mogale City is open for business and, in future, it will continue to be a thriving hub of economic and social development. – Denise Mhlanga
