Considering a career in real estate?

25 Nov 2013

A career in real estate is a rewarding choice for those hungry to operate in an arena of high-flying, business-minded executives.

Each team of agents has a number of support staff, including administrators, legal and financial experts, so there really is a career option for many more disciplines, beyond that of a professional agent.

Working in real estate is not a job for the faint-hearted, or those seeking a part-time job just to keep them out of mischief.

This is according to Craig Hutchison, CEO of Engel & Völkers Southern Africa, who says the professionals that join Engel & Völkers mostly have backgrounds in the corporate world, with substantial experience in negotiations and a deep understanding of the requirements of running their own business.

He says these are leaders in the South African business arena who have understood the potential that the property market offers, and as part of their expansion strategy, they’re continuously on the lookout for committed entrepreneurs who want to enjoy the success of the Engel & Völkers brand.

According to Hutchison, a career in property extends well beyond the sale of homes. A substantial support network is active in each real estate business. Each team of agents has a number of support staff, including administrators, legal and financial experts, so there really is a career option for many more disciplines, beyond that of a professional agent.

Riaan van Deventer, Head of Real Estate of Engel & Völkers Southern Africa, says an Engel &Völkers property consultant needs to be a tenacious, skilled negotiator who is customer focused, approachable and who perseveres in the face of adversity.

He says they’re able to evaluate whether a person with no real estate background will be able to build a successful career in property with their advanced systems. They know that there are numerous career opportunities open in the industry, and they’re happy to work with candidates to find their dream job in an industry that they perhaps had not considered before, with the most advanced training by their in-house training academy, says Van Deventer.

“Our licence partners and team leaders have backgrounds as diverse as conservation, diplomatic corps to commodity traders. But they all have particular traits in common - they're passionate, dedicated professionals who are committed to making the most of the opportunities offered by a career in property.”

Van Deventer says Engel & Völkers is currently expanding its footprint of licence partners across South Africa and with this goes the growth of the sales team. He says they’re on the lookout for likeminded individuals who want to be part of one of the world's fastest growing brands in real estate.
