Cape heritage home for sale

04 Jan 2008
A Joostenbergvlakte property currently for sale features historical cottages from turn of the century for flexible lifestyle options.

In the early 1900s Joostenbergvlakte, which is 40 km from Cape Town and 25 km from Paarl, was one large farm. It was later decided to subdivide it into 'small farming units'. Today most plots are just under a hectare in size, with a few at 3-7 hectares and some larger units in the area. Plots are currently priced from R1.2m and houses from R2m upwards. There are regulations in place to prevent existing plots from being subdivided for housing developments.

Says Cecile van Wyk of Seeff Brackenfell: "Joostenbergvlakte appeals to people who like a peaceful lifestyle. It is close enough to all the major centres, but is like a green, country haven where you can forget about everything outside. It especially appeals to those who want a back to the earth or equestrian lifestyle, and there are also quite a few guest houses here, since it is such a wonderful breakaway spot."

Some plots still have small outbuildings on them – originally the 'labourers' cottages' built at the turn of the last century. These are Heritage buildings, and there is strict control on how these buildings must be preserved and stipulations on how any changes may be made to them.

A property currently on the market at R4,772m has two such cottages on its erf of 8200 m2 as well as the main house. The cottages each comprise one bedroom en suite, lounge and kitchen/diner, and each has its own carport. The two cottages share a separate electronic entrance. They are fully equipped for self-catering purposes and are currently used by the owners to house family and friends visiting from around the country or abroad.

Says Van Wyk: "The awesome farm-like, quiet surroundings are a major attraction. This property, with a prime Cape Dutch-style property plus the two guest cottages on a sizeable erf, this seems to offer many possibilities. It also has already approved plans for a further home of 160 m2 to be built on the other side of the dam that is on the property. It certainly has guest house potential or as a venue for weddings and other events."

The main house has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, four garages and plenty of secure parking. The kitchen has lots of cupboards and granite tops, and there is a very large scullery/laundry. The dining room could easily entertain 20 guests, while the study also has lots of cupboards and could be used as a fourth bedroom. There is a wine cellar which is part of a cosy room with a gas fireplace next to which to enjoy a glass of wine. There is a borehole on the property and security includes cameras and an alarm system as well as automated security gates.
