The village of Gansbaai that lies just south of Hermanus and stretches form De Kelders to Pearly Beach, has seen renewed interest from beach house buyers.
This is according to Seeff agent, Ronel Claassens, who says recent activity includes a number of sales in De Kelders around the R2 million to R3 million price mark and in Gansbaai itself, ranging to about R3.6 million.
Claassens says that it has been a very busy summer season for the village, with holidaymakers flocking here from just about all over the globe, although it is still mostly South Africans that tend to holiday here.
“The tide is turning, though, as the village gains world acclaim for its whale and shark spotting, and is now regarded as one of the best areas in the world to do this,” says Claassens.
“Aside from locals looking to catch a glimpse of these magnificent creatures, we are now also seeing an increase in foreigners visiting our shores.”
The village boasts a typical laid-back coastal lifestyle and, while tranquil and a real respite from the city, is not short on leisure activities or facilities.
The close proximity of the village to the bustling town of Hermanus with its excellent infrastructure makes it an excellent choice for holiday home and retirement buyers.
As with most of the southern Cape, Claassens says the village has its origins as a fishing village. It boasts spectacular scenery that includes the Duynefontein Mountains and fynbos surrounds, spectacular cliffs of De Kelders and expansive stretches of white sandy beaches.
Dyer Island, just off Gansbaai, is the breeding ground of the African Penguin, along with cormorants and other sea birds. There is also Geyser Island, which is home to about 60 000 Cape fur seals and, between the two islands is the area known as ‘shark alley’, home to a great many Great White Sharks.
Gansbaai is easily accessible, about two hours’ drive from Cape Town and the airport.
While activity has picked up in the village, Claassen says it still offers excellent value given its prime coastal setting.
“Believe it or not, you can still find a few homes in the village for under R2 million,” says Claassens.
“Current stock, for example, includes a prime beachfront property for just R3.4 million. The property overlooks the small harbour and includes a well-built timber home with three bedrooms and a garage suitable for a boat. We also have a few top-end houses priced to just under R5 million.”
