Bedroom décor: customised headboards

29 May 2014

The bedroom is the most personal and intimate room in the house, which is why it’s so important to be able to customise every aspect of this space to suit your personal sense of style.

Embellishment is an ideal way to add more interest to your headboard – you can order it simple and plain, or you can have it packed with interesting detail.

Anton Odendaal, from Rochester, explains how to create your own customised headboard with ease:

Selecting a style

“The first step in creating your customised headboard is to choose the shape or style that you want,” says Odendaal. Here are five unique headboard styles to choose from:

- Alex: Classic, yet unique in its shape – it is perfect for vintage-style bedrooms.

- Camel: This headboard boasts a simple, fluid shape – it is ideal for virtually any bedroom style, as it has a timelessly elegant style.

- Stone: The stone headboard epitomises slick modernity, and it is great for the more contemporary minimalist bedroom.

- Delta: The delta headboard, while comparatively simple in shape, offers a grand feeling that will suite a variety of different bedroom styles.

- Ralph: The Ralph headboard has an unfussy classical feel to it, making it ideal for a variety of interesting bedroom styles.

Fabric and colour

Have a say in every design aspect of your bedroom and turn it into a truly personalised space that reflects your unique tastes.

Fabric is warm and comfortable to the touch and it adds a definite sense of luxuriousness and cosiness to a space. It is also available in a wide selection of colours and textures, which makes customisation that much easier. Here are fabric options to choose from:

- Marriot Liquorice: This sultry black fabric is ideal for adding a dark accent to the bedroom.

- Marriot Mouse: A medium brown fabric that offers a neutral warm hue.

- Marriot Sea Breeze: This cool grey-blue tone is neutral, without being boring. It will add a restful, calm and serene feel.

- Velvet Royal: A midnight blue velvet fabric that will stand as a dramatic feature in any bedroom space.

- Velvet Storm: Versatile, yet elegant, this pale grey velvet fabric offers visual interest without being too overwhelming.

- Velvet Wine: A deep burgundy colour, this fabric is as sensuous as it is romantic.

- Alfa Slate: Boasting an inclusive grey-beige hue, with a slight azure tinge for added interest.

- Alfa Grey: A light charcoal fabric that will suit just about every space, this hue will complement both traditional and contemporary styles alike.

- Alfa Khaki: An attractive grey, with organic green undertones, ideal for bedrooms inspired by Mother Nature.

Faux leather options

The first step in creating your customised headboard is to choose the shape or style that you want.

Although faux leather is arguably not as warm to the touch when compared to fabric, it does have its benefits - it is much more durable, easy to keep clean and maintain, and its simple aesthetic complements clean and unfussy décor styles.

You can choose from the following options: burgundy, charcoal, mocha, oak and wine.

Decorative details

The last step of customising your headboard is choosing what sort of embellishment you want on it.

Embellishment is an ideal way to add more interest to your headboard – you can order it simple and plain, or you can have it packed with interesting detail.

- Buttons: This embellishment is a subtle and stylish way to decorate your headboard. While not being too prominent, buttons add sophisticated detail and interesting visual texture.

- Studs: Metal studs boast a classically timeless aesthetic. Not only do they add interest and texture, but they also add some metallic colour, for a more masculine undertone.

“It is now possible to have a say in every design aspect of your bedroom, helping you to turn it into a truly personalised space that reflects your unique tastes and truly make it your own,” says Odendaal.
