Barberton reeling in new buyers

25 Sep 2008
Major roadworks and a booming mining industry are stimulating the property market in Mpumalanga's Barberton.

That's the news from Kim Pascoe, principal of the local Chas Everitt International franchise, who says it is envisaged that the roadworks will greatly enhance access to the area and drive demand for property in the town, once the bustling hub of a gold rush.

The R40 and Bulembu road, which links Barberton with Maputo and Kosi Bay, is currently undergoing a major overhaul, due to be completed in May next year.
Known as the "Royal Route to the Sea", the road is arguably the most scenic in the country and Barberton itself is renowned for its tourism-orientated attractions.

"And prices are already rising. Indeed, freehold property sales of R1,6m and R1,9m are not uncommon now. Black diamond buyers are starting to make an appearance and we expect a significant influx of new buyers from Nelspruit as that area has become somewhat overpopulated of late. The fact that Barberton has one of the lowest crime rates in SA also bolsters its appeal."

Meanwhile, mining activities are expected to give the market further impetus. Plans to create a huge open cast nickel mine at Nkomati are well under way, says Pascoe. The mine will be the biggest of its kind in the Southern hemisphere and developments aplenty are being planned in anticipation of a boom.

Andre van den Bergh, one of the developers of the Greenstone Wildlife Estate in Barberton, says the town represents an excellent investment opportunity, with the current "fairly reasonable" property prices set to escalate in the months to come. One-hectare stands in the estate are currently priced at R565k. Fully developed, these properties will sell at R2m and more, he says.

Plans for a sectional title development - the first of its kind in Barberton - are also in the pipeline. The development will cover 23 ha, a sizeable portion of which has been allocated to retirement facilities. This will undoubtedly be popular with the substantial retired population in the area.
