Agreement to fast track housing delivery in E Cape

23 Jun 2015

Human Settlements Minister, Lindiwe Sisulu, will on Tuesday sign a service level agreement with the Eastern Cape Provincial Government to fast track housing delivery in Port Elizabeth.

In April, Cabinet approved a package of R4.6 billion over the next three years to assist the Port Elizabeth metro and see the Housing Development Agency (HDA) becoming an implementing agent to speed up housing delivery over the next three years.

Minister Sisulu will sign the agreement with MEC for Human Settlements, Helen Sauls-August, and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Danny Jordaan.

The signing ceremony will be preceded by a two-day workshop for contractors at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality. This follows an undertaking by Minister Sisulu at a meeting held with the sector earlier this month.

“The developer’s workshop will outline a programmatic and institutional alignment, realign current programmes, initiatives and policies aimed at contractor or small medium and micro enterprise development and participation in response to the need to accelerate housing delivery within the metro,” the Ministry said.

The workshop kicks off Monday, 22 June 2015.

In April, Cabinet approved a package of R4.6 billion over the next three years to assist the metro and see the Housing Development Agency (HDA) becoming an implementing agent to speed up housing delivery over the next three years.

The project will entail the construction of about 6 000 houses in Port Elizabeth’s Bethelsdorp, another 7 000 in Kayamandi, 2 200 in Walmer and 491 houses in Chatty.

The funds will also be used to upgrade 15 700 residential sites and the construction of bulk service infrastructure.

These projects will further contribute to job creation in the metro. - SAnews.gov.za
