Redefine Properties reports that Phase 2 refurbishments of Jewel City, a high-security district in the Johannesburg CBD, have been completed.
Jewel City houses about 300 leading diamond dealers, jewellers, diamond laboratories and industry schools and is the base for the South African Diamond Regulator and State Trader.
This refurbishment added 137 visitor parking bays close to the visitor sign-on station.
David Rice, chief operating officer at Redefine Properties, says parking bays support the R30 million extensions to the new head office in Regulator House for the South African Diamond Regulator and the State Trader.
The area was increased from 1 630 square metres to 2 480 square metres and includes the provision of a secure loading bay and a training and conference facilities.
The entire precinct is now just over 43 000 square metres.
“Redefine has invested heavily in the precinct and if demand allows will add an additional 5 000 square metres to accommodate further parking, offices and beneficiation space,” says Rice.
The Marieamman Temple in Marabastad Pretoria has undergone extensive repairs to ensure that it continues to stand sentinel over Marabastad’s future generations.
It is a national monument and one the few examples of Indian Hindu temple architecture in South Africa.
Built in 1905, it is also the oldest Hindu temple in Pretoria.
The building’s most recognisable feature is its ornate gopuram – a pyramid-shaped tower typically found at the entrance to temples in Southern India.
Specialist contractors Gordon Verhoef and Krause (GVK) were selected for the task, given their extensive restoration experience, which has included high-profile projects such as the Union Buildings in Pretoria and City Hall in Cape Town as well as several national monuments.
Eben Meyburgh, managing director of GVK’s operation in Gauteng adds that the Marieamman Temple is an important part of Marabastad and South Africa and the restorations and repairs have revitalised her for another good few years.-Denise Mhlanga
