Add colour to your TV room

26 May 2010
Many of us will be spending the month of June glued to the television and relaxing in the TV-room, watching the world’s greatest football spectacular unfold in our very own country.

Whether the room you’ve assigned for this thrilling pastime is a dedicated room in the house or a spare room, why not transform it into a space where family and friends can come together and enjoy every moment of this wonderful game?

“A television room should reflect the personality of the people living in the home and shouldn’t be boring. It needs to be comfortable, attractive and practical – all at the same time. Apart from issues surrounding the functionality of the room, however, it is possible to transform it into a space that pulsates with energy, thanks to the clever use of colour,” says Anne Roselt, colour manager at Plascon.

Colour inspiration

You can get colour inspiration from various sources – it is all around you.

Roselt advises that you take your inspiration from the various flags of the participating countries: “These colours are not dull and toned-down, but bright and energetic. Think of the Brazilian flag with its vivid green and buttery yellow, the Danish and English flags with their brilliant red, and our own multi-coloured flag.”

Alternatively, another great source of colour inspiration is to look at the colour combinations that you can find in nature. Take the seaside, for example: it is easy to see how the colour of the beach sand and rocks work well with the blue sky and turquoise ocean. Or perhaps look at a sunflower – it will show you how the bright yellow petals complement the flower’s dark green stem and brown seeds.

Creating a mood

Consider the mood you want to create. All colours are infused with some kind of emotion or sentiment. Yellows, for example, tend to lift a space by adding some sunshine and an ambience of happiness and positivity.

Vibrant and rich shades of orange can add to the fun and promote a social atmosphere, whilst attention-grabbing shades of red will offer a dramatic and warm effect. Greens, such as lime green for example, makes for a fresh, funky and contemporary space, and a combination of all of these colours will most definitely get everyone in a cheerful mood.

Create a feature wall

If you are nervous of bright colours, start with a feature wall such as the wall behind the television, says Roselt: “A feature wall immediately gives the room a lift and a new look – creating depth and drama, without being too overwhelming.”

Paint the wall in a favourite colour or a colour that features in the furnishings, accessories or artwork on display in the room. For example, you can pick up on a colour featured in the room’s printed curtain upholstery – this will ensure that the feature wall blends in with and complements the rest of the room’s décor. Alternatively, you can use stencils or wallpaper to add a pop of colour to your room.

Bold accents

If you are happy to keep your walls white or neutral, why not introduce colour by adding some brightly coloured accessories and soft furnishings. There is nothing quite like brightly coloured scatter cushions displayed on a neutral couch to lift the entire composition.

Choose your colour scheme and bring it into the room’s décor composition by adding colourful new curtains, furniture, rugs, carpeting, candles, vases and various other knick-knacks in the chosen hues.

When it comes to adding colour to a room, any change, big or small, can lift the entire tone and mood of a space, and alter the way you feel about it. Changing your home’s appeal with colour can be both rewarding and fun. Paint is affordable, easy and quick to apply, and very durable.

Wallpaper is a little more costly, but can create a dazzling end result with minimum effort.

Whatever you use, be sure that colour can transform a dreary or outdated TV-room into an exciting space, where the family can relax together in front of the television and enjoy the soccer spectacular awaiting us. - Antonella Desi
