5 patio decorating tips for entertainers

Outdoor entertaining doesn't have to be an elaborate or expensive affair, especially if you have great food, good company and inviting decor. Get design tips...

Although you may already have outdoor furniture, make sure you include extra seating to accommodate bigger parties and surprise guests.

1. Provide extra seating

Although you may already have outdoor furniture, make sure you include extra seating to accommodate bigger parties and surprise guests.

When looking for additional seating, consider simple pieces like fold-up chairs which are quick and easy to set up and fold away.

Adding a few more seats to your patio doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style. Invest in weather-appropriate benches, cubes or ottomans that complement your existing décor. You can use these as decorative side tables or shuffle them around to accommodate guests.

You can also create a playful and laid-back entertainment zone by incorporating colourful bean bags, or creating a cosy and intimate area using large floor pillows.

Just remember to choose pieces that can withstand the outdoors.

2. Add affordable décor updates

For a fresh look, swap out dated accent pillows, table runners and slipcovers for fresh fabrics. Visit flea markets and scour bargain bins to see what you can find.

Renew your outdoor entertainment area without ‘breaking the bank’. For a fresh look, swap out dated accent pillows, table runners and slipcovers for fresh fabrics. Visit flea markets and scour bargain bins to see what you can find.

To furnish your tables, organise two or three clear vases and fill them up with different shades of gravel or sand. Layer the sand in an alternating fashion to create visual appeal and then cluster these in the middle of the table to use as a striking centrepiece. Alternatively, you can scatter the vases around the patio. You can do the same using fresh flowers and plants.

Vary the size of the planters and vases you use to make your space stand out.

3. Patio storage ideas

Ideally, you want to invest in an outdoor lounge with built-in storage for cushions and throws, however, there are cheaper alternatives that you can use like ottomans and benches.

You could also add a bit of character to your outdoor room using wicker or vintage locker baskets, which can be tucked away under a table or chair.

4. Add style underfoot

Throwing down an area rug can help define, and add colour and warmth to your space.

It’s also one of the easiest ways to update your outdoor living area without spending too much.

While decorating with a small rug can help highlight a piece of furniture, a large-scale rug will help add a touch of comfort.

There’s so much you can do with an outdoor rug too, like covering the walkways leading up to your patio or creating a layered look. Whichever way you choose to use them, make sure your rug is fade and mildew resistant.

5. Bring in the heat

Outdoor entertaining doesn’t have to come to an end because summer is over. By simply adding drapes or outdoor blinds, you can keep the evening breeze at bay. This will also give your patio that ‘cabana’ feel.

Alternatively, you could use a table or freestanding patio heater to keep your guests warm. Katlego Sekano
