4 ways to style a white sofa

07 Oct 2015

White sofas are popular because they are elegant, crisp and exceptionally versatile in that they complement a wide variety of décor styles.

If your sofa is upholstered in leather, for example, then think of adding a throw and scatters in contrasting textures like cashmere or velvety suede.

However, the truth is, plain white sofas can also be a boring, dull addition to your living space.

Ryan Beattie from La-Z-Boy, offers four easy ways to instantly jazz up a white sofa.

1. Invest in texture

Textural contrast can go a long way to adding depth and interest to a space. If your sofa is upholstered in leather, for example, then think of adding a throw and scatters in contrasting textures like cashmere or velvety suede.

You can choose to keep the look monochromatic or use soft furnishings in different hues.

The trick to successfully achieving this, is to decorate in layers, and juxtapose one layer against the other.

2. Add some punchy pattern

Choosing scatters that have different types of patterns in a similar colour combination can make for a dramatic visual aesthetic.

A good idea is to choose dual-sided, print pillows that can be flipped for a whole new look.

Scatters are a great way of experimenting with colour and pattern, and since they aren’t too expensive to change, this is an affordable way of bringing the latest trends into your living space.

If you get tired of them, simply switch them around with new scatters that appeal to your new-found tastes.

3. Draw inspiration from your surrounds

Look around your décor scheme and draw on the colour palette that is already featured in the room. For example, if you have a blue feature wall, then perhaps you could include similarly toned throw pillows, as well as an accent pillow in a contrasting colour or pattern.

You can use artwork as your point of reference.

Using colours from the rest of the décor scheme is a sure way of creating a sense of continuity and cohesion in the space. If you’re crafty, a clever way of adding colour from your surrounds into your sofa, is to trim the sofa’s pillows with complementary coloured piping for a fun and eye-catching update.

4. Put a throw on it

If you’d like to give your white sofa a complete makeover, you can choose a throw that appeals to you, and throw it over the back and seat of the sofa for an entirely new look.

This has the ability to transform a sofa in a matter of minutes. For a neat and professional end result, it’s a good idea to customise and alter the size of the throw, so that it is wide enough to cover all the seats, and long enough to drape from the bottom of the front of the sofa, right through to the bottom of the back of the sofa.

Be sure to tuck it in along the back and side of the seats for a neat appearance.
