Free State
The Free State is located in the centre of South Africa and is bordered by 7 of the 9 provinces. Bloemfontein, loosely translated as a “fountain of flowers”, is the capital city and rich in natural supplies.
It is also one of the judicial capitals of South Africa. Situated in between the Vaal River in the north and
the Orange River in the south, the Free State is mainly flat grasslands and crop fields rising up to spectacular mountains.

The Free State can be divided into the following regions:
• Fezile Dabi District: an agricultural production area.
• Lejweleputswa District: boasts goldfields and is a major agricultural area.
• Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality: holds the largest population.
• Thabo Mofutsanyana District: borders Lesotho and has beautiful fruit farms.
• Xhariep District: located in the south-west of the province and is a semi-arid area.
Significant towns include Welkom, the heart of the goldfields and Odendaalsrus, a gold-mining town; Sasolburg, named after the petrochemical company Sasol; Kroonstad, an agricultural, administrative and educational centre; Phuthaditjhaba, a vast and sprawling settlement known for its beautiful handcrafted items; and Bethlehem, gateway to the Eastern Highlands of the Free State.
The Free State is rich in South African history, heritage and agricultural festivals and activities, hosting some of the most popular festivals in the world and attracting people from far and wide. The town of Bothaville hosts one of the largest agricultural festivals in the world, NAMPO, and the annual Cherry Festival held in Ficksburg is the oldest crop festival in South Africa.
